Interview: Eli & Fur look forward to festival season

London based Eliza Noble and Jennifer Skillman, collectively known as Eli & Fur, have celebrated global acclaim since emerging onto the electronic music scene in 2012.

Their debut track propelled them towards the top of the coveted Hype Machine chart, having since released a string of original music, remixes and collaborations.

On the live circuit they’ve cemented their unique identity, blending together house and dance. As well as DJing, the duo are renowned for their full live performances.

With a summer of festivals on the horizon, including appearances at Steel Yard London with Above & Beyond, and Creamfields, we caught up with Noble and Skillman to find out what’s in store.

How are you feeling about taking to Steel Yard London with Above & Beyond?

Very excited, looks like an amazing place to play and it’s in our home town. We can’t wait.

What do you love about playing festivals?

The diversity of a festival is a bonus, you can see so many varied acts over the space of a weekend. It’s more of an experience being away for a few days in a place that you wouldn’t usually be. Not having a plan and just getting a bit lost is always liberating.

How do you prepare for your sets?

We are constantly searching and collating new music or old favourites, we also love to find interesting loops and sounds to bring another element to our sets.

What is your favourite festival set you have ever seen?

Black Coffee at Ultra last year was amazing, it was our first year there too so all in all a pretty incredible experience. We played for Carl Cox in his Mega Structure too. Loved it!

Whose dressing room would you love to be next to at Steel Yard?

We haven’t actually met or played with any of the acts so anyone really, looking forward to seeing them.

Which DJ has thrown the best party you’ve been to?

Tâches threw a pretty good house party in LA the other night.

How would you describe the Eli & Fur sound and atmosphere?

Melodic, dark, energetic, our own vocals. We play tracks we love to dance to, our tastes are slightly different which we try to communicate within our sets to keep it interesting. We love dance music that creates emotion and moments that aren’t easily forgotten and we hope to create those moments on the dance floor though our own music and tunes from others that we love.

As a duo, what advice would you give to those looking for creative collaboration?

Be open to each other’s ideas, its really a blessing having two minds on a project, to bounce ideas around and as long as you use that to your advantage and compromise it can be the most rewarding way of making music.

What advice would you give to aspiring DJs in the UK electronic scene?

If this is something you are 100% committed to doing then never give up, work hard and stay true to yourself. It’s a lot more rewarding. The best advice someone gave us starting out was to focus on your strengths, sometimes you can get caught up in trying to follow the hype or try to fit yourself into a box and it sounds super cliche but we both agree that the most authentic people are the most magnetic.

Eli & Fur appear at Steel Yard London with Above & Beyond on Saturday 26 May 2018, and at Creamfields from 23 – 26 August 2018. Tickets are available now through Ticketmaster.co.uk
